OK, I know we don’t normally go outside of our Okinawan pop culture bubble but we had to blog about this J-pop singer that we’re totally excited about: Alan (in keeping with the Japanese infatuation with using lowercase for names, in the J-pop world her name is listed as alan).
Alan is a Tibetan/Chinese singer and Erhu player from Sichuan province who debuted in 2005 with the album Sheng Sheng Zui Ru Lan. She made her Japanese language debut in 2007 under avex in Japan with the single Ashita e no Sanka. (Via Wiki.theppn.)
In the YouTube clip above, she’s found doing a wonderful cover of “Nada Sou Sou” (and here’s our tie-in to Okinawan pop culture 😛 ) with her own er-hu accompaniment. And, hey, it’s shot in an Apple Store (Sendai, Japan) too. 😉
There’s already a lot of buzz about her in the blogosphere and I’m thinking she’ll reach mainstream ears since she’s singing the theme song (“Xin Zhan ~RED CLIFF~”/”RED CLIFF ~Shin Sen~”) to John Woo’s latest film, “Red Cliff” (Takeshi Kaneshiro is one of the film’s stars).
Alan’s official website (Avex).
